Abstract
Vocalizations of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel Spermophilus tridecemlineatus from Lubbock county, Texas [USA] are described in terms of variables obtained from tape recordings analyzed with an oscilloscope. Six distinct calls and their assumed functions were observed and recorded: trill, alert or warning; long purr, alert; purr, disturbance; squeak, distress; growl, threat; and tooth chatter, threat. Functions of each call varied depending upon the context in which they were elicited.
