In criticizing the authors' work about the effects of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation, B. J. Calder and B. M. Staw (see PA, Vol 53:Issue 5) point out that additional data are necessary to substantiate several assertions. Those data are presented here, and they are seen to be consistent with earlier findings. Other criticisms are considered within the context of cognitive evaluation theory, and areas are pointed out where additional research is necessary.
