Abstract
• Poisoning was given as the cause of death in 5,883 cases in the United States in 1953. Pesticides are recognized as being generally dangerous, but innumerable other chemicals in common use are also capable of causing fatal intoxication. Poison control centers can perform a valuable service by being available for first-aid calls, aiding in the identification of the active ingredient in poisonous mxtures, assembling local data on accidental poisoning, publishing warnings, aiding prevention, and facilitating research. Keywords
