THE PREVALENCE OF CRYPTOCOCCOSIS IN THE KOALA (PHASCOLARCTOS CINEREUS)

Abstract
Infection with fungus Cryptococcus neoformans has been found to be a common cause of death among koalas in the Sydney region of eastern New South Wales. The lesions most commonly found were in the central nervous system (meningitis or meningo-encephalitis) and in the lungs (localized or diffuse infection). This infection may constitute a serious threat to the koala population and possibly to other animals, and in view of this and its incidence in man it would seem that further investigation of the disease in domestic and native animals is desirable.
