Abstract
An unexpected result was obtained this respiratory enzyme was found to have several pH optima depending upon whether the measurements were made aero-bically or anaerobically. The kind of oxidation-reduction system in which the enzyme functions was a factor in pH optimum. Following optima were obtained: in methylene blue, 8.75; in toluylene blue, 7.5; in 1-naphthol-Na-sulpho-nate-2,6-dichlorphenol-indophenol, 8. These showed that the optimum for the dehydrase could not be determined in dye solutions. What was measured, was the optimum for the reaction between activated substrate and dye.
