With the use of ESR spectroscopy NO2 molecules were found in minor quantities in a .gamma.-irradiated single crystal of UMP. NO2 is produced from the built-in impurities in a single crystal. The concentration of the NO2 molecules depends on the commercial source of the compound. In light of the present observation some previously reported studies of the paramagnetic centers in a number of nucleic acid constituents were discussed.
