Abstract
The objectives of this investigation were to determine the usefulness of 0.6 M sucrose-10% DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) extender for cryopreservation of milt from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and to test whether the addition of pentoxifylline or blood plasma to this extender would enhance the fertilizing capacity of cryopreserved semen. Data confirmed the effectiveness of a sucrose–DMSO extender for the cryopreservation of rainbow trout sperm. Survival rate at the eyed stage was 93.1 ± 3.2% of controls (N = 7). Pentoxifylline did not improve cryopreservation success. A significant decrease in fertilization success was recorded for samples supplemented with blood plasma.
