Abstract
A series of cases of cancer of the larynx were treated at the Karolinska Hospital during the years 1940 to 1959. The determinate cure rate was 67.4%. The cases were classified according to the TNM [tumor node metastosis] system. It is recommended that glottic T1 [tumor1] and T2 with normal mobility of the cords be treated with irradiation. All tumors of low differentiation should be treated with irradiation primarily. It is important to decide whether a tumor is growing into the subglottic region. This can be revealed by transconioscopy. Subglottic extension was found to worsen the prognosis, especially in irradiated cases. In advanced larynx carcinomas (T4) pre-operative irradiation and extended laryngectomy could improve the prognosis in these cases. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
