OVARIAN HORMONE THRESHOLD FOR EXPERIMENTAL MENSTRUATION IN MONKEYS

Abstract
The amount of ovarian follicular hormone and time of treatment necessary to induce experimental menstruation were studied in ovariectomized monkeys of 3 age groups,[long dash]adult, adolescent and immature. In adults small amounts of hormone replace the endocrine function of the ovaries and "condition" the uterus (produce an interval endometrium). Cessation of injections is followed, after a short latent period, by menstruation. Similar treatment is effective in adolescent and immature animals but larger doses of hormone are necessary. The minimal time for establishing theelin effects approximates 6 days, the optimum, 10 days or more. The exptl. procedure maintained the uterus and mammary glands preventing the usual "castrate atrophy," even though periods without hormone were interspersed with periods of injections.
