Food Poisoning Caused by Hemolytic Staphylococcus in a Defense Plant

Abstract
A severe epidemic of food poisoning in a defense plant involving 81 employees is described. Corned beef contaminated by a food handler having a finger infected with a hemolytic staphylococcus was assumed to be the cause of the epidemic. The onset of the symptoms began 2 1/2-3 hrs. after the corned beef was eaten. All patients reporting to the dispensary were hospitalized. An interesting account of the functioning of a community Emergency Medical Service is given.
