Abstract
An outline for an emerging theory to guide occupational therapy practice with mental disorders is provided. A hierarchy of cognitive levels with an accompanying task analysis describes functional distinctions in the severity of disorder, as reflected in routine task behavior. Recent advances in the neurosciences are examined for their potential impact on knowledge development and program objectives.
