Abstract
THE PREVALENCE of obstructive airway disease (OAD) is rising rapidly in the United States and elsewhere.1 Between 1980 and 1994, the prevalence of asthma and related disorders increased by 75% for all ages,2 while the age-adjusted death rate increased by 71%.3,4 During the same period, body weight and obesity have increased at similar rates,5 suggesting a possible link between obesity and OAD in the community.
