Abstract
P. denitrificans was cultured under conditions using N2O,O2 or varying concentrations of NO3 in order to determine the effects of these growth conditions on the ability of resting cells to utilize NO3 and N2O as hydrogen acceptors for the oxidation of an organic substrate. Cells grown under N2O were able to utilize that gas without a lag period whereas those grown under O2 or with NO3 exhibited a lag. The length of the lag period varied with the concentration of NO3 in the culture medium. All cells produced N2O from NO3, the extent of production being dependent upon culture conditions as well as upon the rate of utilization of N2O.Keywords
