Abstract
A study has been made of the radiolysis of aqueous solutions of NO 3, NO 2 and Fe (CN)3– 6 within the first millisecond after exposure to a submicrosecond pulse of 15 MeV electrons. The overall reaction of the electron adduct of NO 3 with water has a time constant of 9.5 µs at 25°C and it is catalyzed by H+. The reduction product of nitrite, 2OH, appears to originate from two processes with time constants of 18 and < 2µs respectively. The reduction of ferricyanide is probably complicated by aquocomplex formation. The rate constant for CH2OH + Fe(CN)3– 6→ CH2O + H++ Fe(CN)4– 6 is 4.2 × 109 l. mol–1 s–1.
