UNIT ACTIVITY IN BULBAR RESPIRATORY CENTRE

Abstract
By means of platinum microelectrodes connected with a condensor-coupled balanced amplifier, operating a Philips cathode-ray oscillograph, a variety of spike-potentials have been recorded from the medulla oblongata of rabbits. Volleys showing a respiratory rhythm were found near the midline 1-3 mm. rostral of the obex. According to their relation with the respiratory movements, 3 types may be distinguished: (a) inspiratory, (b) expiratory and (c) discharges supposedly from central vagal origin. The conduct of these volleys on inspiratory and expiratory stenosis and on anelectro-tonus and stimulation of the vagal nerve has been studied and analysis is attempted by the making of frequency diagrams.
