The toxicologic and pathologic findings in selected cases from a group of 300 deaths from drug overdose are presented. These include 146 deaths from seven of the more common drugs, which accounted for 49% of this group of 300 cases. Two series of combined drug action are also included from multiple-drug cases. The morphologic findings were nonspecific and nondiagnostic. Wide variations in lethal ranges for the various drugs were found, and some of the reasons for these were discussed. The need for validation of the relationship between drugs and death is stressed, since the need for dependability of these findings as a reference point for practicing pathologists and toxicologists is evident. This is a preliminary report, to be followed by a more inclusive compendium of drug-overdose data, which awaits the accumulation of adequate numbers of cases.
