Abstract
N-(2-methyl-4-chlorophenyl)-N',N'-dimethlyformamidine (C-8514/Schering 36268) is an acaricide of extraordinary ovicidal and very good adulticidal efficacy. It killed adult spider mites when applied as a vapor and as a spray, and was equally effective against organophosphate-tolerant carmine spider mites, Tetranychus telarius (L.), and nontolerant two-spotted spider mites, T. urticae (Koch). C-8514 penetrated into plant tissue, from which it was released in ovicidal quantities. This mode of action was demonstrated for both sprays and vapors. The mode of action is not based on inhibition of cholinesterase which was shown in comparative toxicological and enzyme inhibition experiments. The versatility of C-8514 opens up new possibilities in mite control and makes it a very interesting new acaricide.
