Effects of β-Adrenergic Receptors Stimulation and Blockade on Gastric Acid Secretion in Pigeons

Abstract
The effects of β-adrenergic stimulant drug, Nylidrin HCl, and the β-adrenergic blocking agent, Pro-pranolol HCl, on gastric acid secretion were studied in pigeons with gastric fistulae. The pigeons’ stomachs did not secrete spontaneously without previous application of some gastric acid stimulants. Nylidrin administration induced gastric secretion which was rich in acid content in a dose-dependent manner. All effects of Nylidrin were blocked by prior treatment with β-adrenergic blocking agent Propranolol. Histamine-stimulated gastric secretion was significantly inhibited by Propranolol.
