Abstract
Pacione M. (1979) The in-town hypermarket; an innovation in the geography of retailing, Reg. Studies 13, 15–24. The recent changes in British retailing which have led to the growing demand for hypermarkets are discussed and the definitive characteristics of this novel form of retailing identified. Arguments for and against hypermarket developments are examined with particular reference to urban retailing in Glasgow, and the competitive impact of a new hypermarket on the city's pre-existing retailing system assessed. Finally a number of conclusions regarding the potential role of the hypermarket within British cities are presented.
