Abstract
Trifluoroacetic anhydride is a mild reagent for specifically rearranging heterocyclic N‐oxides to the corresponding nuclear oxygenated heterocycles. 2‐Cyanoquinol‐4‐one is thus obtained from 2‐cyanoquinoline N‐oxide, while two products are formed from 4‐cyanoquinoline N‐oxide, namely 4‐cyanoquinol‐2‐one, and 3‐hydroxy‐4‐cyanoquinoline. The structures of the new compounds have been confirmed by degradation.
