THE CAUSE OF MAMMARY DEVELOPMENT DURING PSEUDO-PREGNANCY IN THE RABBIT

Abstract
Removal of ovaries from 2 rabbits during early pseudopregnancy stopped mammary development. Production of corpora lutea by vasectomized coitus, by injection of anterior pituitary extract (3 rabbits), and by human pregnant urine (6 rabbits) was followed by mammary development. Pricking of follicles without production of corpora lutea did not produce development. The stimulus for mammary development evidently arises in the ovary and is independent of coitus being dependent on the presence of corpora lutea.
