Influence of Live Weight, Age and Sex on Circulating Growth Hormone Levels in Swine

Abstract
This work indicates that there is no difference between barrows and gilts in circulating GH levels when measured at a constant age. The negative correlations of traits reflecting rate of growth and percent muscle of the carcass with circulating GH levels supports the following hypothesis. Pigs that utilize GH faster will exhibit the lower circulating GH levels. This work indicates that pigs of the same age and similar size do not differ significantly in circulating GH levels while pigs of the same age and different size do show significant differences in circulating GH levels. This suggests that the decrease in circulating GH level seen as animals become larger and older is primarily due to their increased size. Copyright © 1971. American Society of Animal Science.
