Growth and physical properties of single crystalline MgB2
Abstract
We report the growth of high-quality MgB2 single crystals. Hexagonal plate, ball, and pillar shaped crystals were grown under different synthesis conditions. The crystal with a hexagonal plate shape showed shiny surfaces with a length up to about 60 micrometers and a thickness of 2 - 5 micrometers. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy image indicates clear hexagonal structure with an a-axis lattice constant of 3.09 angstroms. A very sharp superconducting transition at 38 K with a transition width of 0.3 K, was observed. The upper critical field anisotropy ratio was 1.7, suggesting that the basic scientific research in this compound should be performed by using high-quality single-crystals.Keywords
