Griffith fracture equation—An experimental test

Abstract
The Griffith fracture equation was not followed when the strengths of rods of soda‐lime glass tested immediately after abrading and then after abrading and ageing for 24 h in water were compared. The aged samples were stronger than samples not aged, but the cracks in both were of nealry the same length. Two possible explanations of this discrepancy are explored.
