THERAPEUTIC STUDIES IN HYPERTHYROIDISM: PROPYLTHIOURACIL

Abstract
28 patients with hyperthyroidism were studied, by means of multiple protein bound blood I detns., during and after the admn. of propylthiouracil. Seven of these patients were not controlled after treatment periods of 2-15 mos. 15% of the patients developed a transient leukopenia, not severe enough to warrant discontinuance of the drug. No striking difference was observed in the rate of fall of protein bound blood iodine levels during the first 24 days of treatment, between groups receiving 150 mg., 300 mg., or 600 mg., of propylthiouracil daily. Of 7 patients, who stopped treatment after an avg. of 9 months, during which time control was excellent, 6 relapsed. The authors feel that propylthiouracil is not well adapted to the long term, definitive treatment of hyperthyroidism.
