A Supervisory Group Process Approach to Address Staff Burnout and Countertransference in Alcoholism Treatment

Abstract
Burnout and countertransference are problems frequently encountered by alcoholism treatment staff. A clinical excerpt from an experimental supervisory group process approach is presented in dialogue form together with the underlying theoretical principles and comments on the interventions of the co-leaders. The group dialogue illustrates a method of mediating these feelings of countertransference and resolving them so the therapist is free to respond creatively to the patient's needs.
