Abstract
The vibrational spectra of H5IO6 and a number of periodates containing the anion IO6 5- are reported and frequencies are assigned. The force constants of the IO6 5- ion are interpreted on the basis of noticeable π bonding. The IO bonds in H5IO6 are not all equivalent. As shown by their Raman spectra, solutions of H5IO6 in concentrated strong acids contain the hexahydroxoiodine(VII) ion I (OH)6 + with six equivalent IO bonds.
