Paediatric benchmarking: a review of its development

Abstract
In this article the author explains how a benchmarking network for paediatric services was developed. The principles are described and the process for topic selection is discussed Originally developed by industry to offer a structured approach to quality measurement and the improvement of services, the concept of benchmarking has since been used in the NHS (Aspling and Lagoe 1996,McKeown 1996). By 1995, its potential to support the development and dissemination of best practice was evident (Ellis 1995,Lam 1994).
