Abstract
In this paper the variational method is applied to the Dirac equation for heliumlike atoms. We use screened hydrogenic wave functions and find accurate energy values, corresponding to saddle points in parameter space. The energies and one-photon radiative transition rates for the 1, 1s2s, and 1s2p states are calculated with little numerical effort.
