Abstract
The enzyme glutathione reductase was present in human serum, spinal fluid and serous effusions. A spectrophotometric method is described for determination of its activity which is expressed in units based on the change in optical density resulting from the oxidation of reduced triphos-phopyridine nucleotide. Normal human serum has an activity of 10 to 70 units. Elevations beyond the normal range are found in cases of acute infectious or toxic hepatitis and in patients with carcinomas but not with sarcomas or lymphomas. This enzyme was present in all the serous effusions studied, but reached an elevated activity only in effusions containing malignant cells. Keywords
