Macular Holes Associated With Proliferative Sickle Cell Retinopathy

Abstract
• We report on four patients with sickle cell hemoglobin (SC) disease in whom macular holes developed. A major factor contributing to the formation of the holes was macular stretching, caused by simultaneous nasal traction from epipapillary fibroglial tissue and temporal traction from peripheral fibrovascular and fibroglial tissue. Another possible factor was macular ischemia.
