Placement of Electrodes in the Hypothalamus of Goats

Abstract
A technique is described that makes possible the stimulation of hypothalamic centers in goats. Since stereotaxic atlases are not available for the larger domestic animals, probes must be functionally placed. A Plexiglass plate containing 102 guide cannulas in a 2.0-by 2.5-cm area is surgically places on the skull in such a way that the center block of the guide plate rests on the dura. Postoperatively in the unanesthetized goats, probes can be inserted through the cannulas. By means of the one surgical operation, various responses can be induced by the required functional placement of probes. Responses from hypothalamic stimulation and other uses of the preparation are discussed.
