Abstract
Retinine1 left to stand for a short time in alkaline soln. with excess of many amino compounds and proteins, exhibits the absorption spectrum of alkaline indicator yellow, and on acidification shows that acid indicator yellow. Retinine1, treated in acid soln. with aniline and similar compounds, gives a red soln. with [lambda] max. about 500 m[mu]. This shows that retinine can give rise to a rhodopsin-like chromophore although in a different way from rhodopsin. Keywords
