Abstract
The generation of acoustic signals following optical absorption in gases and solids is described. Important parameters in the design of cells and their relationships to detection sensitivity and limiting noise signals are discussed. Examples are given of important applications of the optoacoustic effect in pollution monitoring, the measurement of lifetimes and gas-phase and solid state spectroscopy. Keywords
