Abstract
The mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MarsilidR, Marplan, Niamid and Stinerval) possess analgesic activity. Analgesia was demonstrated in both the rat and the rabbit by the dental pulp method. The analgesic effects, especially in the rabbit, are statistically significant (p < 0.01). After oral administration, analgesia begins within 20-40 minutes, but does not last longer than 100-120 minutes. The analgesic effects are not strong nor prolonged enough to explain the effectiveness of this group of substances in angina pectoris. The analgesia is unrelated to the inhibition of monoamine oxidase. The beneficial effect in angina pectoris is probably due above all to the psychopharmacological action of these substances, in particular in that the pain and distress are better tolerated by the patient. Keywords
