EXPERIMENTAL HYPERTENSION

Abstract
This review deals "only with exptl. hypertension in which the evidence indicates that both the systolic and diastolic pressures are elevated." It excludes acute arterial hypertension caused by various drugs. Hypertension that results from increased intracranial pressure or from cerebral anemia is dismissed with brief discussion because it is probably not closely related to clinical hypertension. Hypertension associated with renal isochemia is reviewed in detail under the headings: exptl. glomerulonephritis, bilateral nephrectomy, obstruction to the flow of urine, subtotal nephrectomy by various methods, kidney damage by various means, constriction of renal arteries, renal pressor substance, attempts to modify the hypertension due to renal ischemia; with this conclusion, "Granting that there are some types of hypertension that are non-renal in origin, the evidence which has been reviewed indicates that most instances of exptl. and probably of clinical hypertension are related to some abnormality in function of the kidneys." Recent important articles are discussed in a separate addendum.
