The Obscure Figures Test: An Instrument for Measuring “Cognitive Innovation”

Abstract
A pencil-and-paper test for the assessment of individuals' capacities for cognitive innovation was developed. The construct of “cognitive innovation” refers to the process whereby new organization is introduced into the cognitive structure. The test consists of 40 figures which S is asked to interpret in clever and unusual ways. It has satisfactory reliability and appears to be a potentially useful instrument in studies concerned with creativity and reactions to novel stimuli.
