Abstract
Summary The pattern of raspberry root growth was studied using plants of cv. Mailing Jewel growing adjacent to the windows of an underground root observation laboratory. The length of visible white root was recorded at weekly intervals and showed a marked seasonal pattern in four consecutive years, with a large mid-summer peak. The pattern of production of new roots was correlated with soil temperature. All plants produced a large amount of root below 0.6 m. Shoot growth and root growth began at approximately the same time, although root growth continued until much later in the year.
