Abstract
An estimate of the X-ray flux from the hot spot model of cataclysmic variables is in agreement with the recent detection of soft X-rays from SS Cyg. Rates of mass transfer are ∼ 10 −8M yr −1 in dwarf novae and ∼ 10.7 M yr −1 in classical novae. Some implications of these rates are discussed. Possible X-ray candidates for RW Tri and U Gem are proposed.
