Abstract
WHEN the hypoglycemic agents for oral use were first tested in human subjects, they were soon found to be particularly effective in older patients with diabetes, especially in obese patients whose disease was of short duration.1 2 3 Since these are also the patients who often do well after omitting insulin, it appeared advisable to test them on a double-blind basis to determine how much of the improvement on the sulfonylureas was actually due to the administration of the drug.For this reason tolbutamide and a placebo were given on a double-blind basis to a group of 32 patients.
