The Anencephalic Infant as a Possible Donor for Cardiac Transplantation

Abstract
The hearts of 79 anencephalic infants have been evaluated as possible donors for ortho. topic homotransplantation in man. These hearts tended to be small. Severe and complex congenital cardiac malformations were present in four cases. Minor defects, some probably within normal limits, were present in 12 others. Electrocardiograms in four anencephalic infants were normal during periods of clinical well being. Thirty-four of the 79 infants were born live and survived from a few minutes to 27 days.
