Factors Affecting the Measurement of the Extinction Coefficient of Fe3+ Ions in a Fricke Dosimeter Solution

Abstract
Recently published values of the molar extinction coefficient epsilon of Fe3+ ions in 0.8N H2SO4 measured in the 305 mμ region differ by as much as 6%. The values of epsilon obtained using the same set of solutions and different spectrophotometers show a maximum difference of 9%. Possible sources of error in the measurement of epsilon have been investigated experimentally and methods of reducing the error are suggested. The most probable value of epsilon at 305 mμ is assumed to be 2197 I moles-1 cm-1.
