Abstract
This article proposes seven standards for evaluating the quality of administration in the American states and offers quantitative indicators for five of these standards. The interrelationships among these indicators are explored, and the indicators are related to a number of the socioeconomic and political features of the states. Some suggestions are offered concerning further study of administration in the American state context. Keywords
