Abstract
The differential cross section for the elastic scattering of protons by has been measured by Mooring, Koester, Goldberg, Saxon, and Kaufmann in the range of bombarding energies between 0.4 Mev and 3.95 Mev. In the present work, the energy dependence of this cross section is interpreted in terms of the combination of Coulomb and nuclear potential scattering with resonant scattering. This resonant scattering arises from the excitation of energy levels of the compound nucleus . The general trend of the observed cross section between 0.4 Mev and 3.4 Mev, including the three broadest resonances, is well fitted theoretically.
