Abstract
Sixth instar larvae, prepupae and 2‐day old pupae of Heliothis armigera were treated topically with 1 μg dose of R‐20458/insect. Adults emerging from each treatment were allowed to mate with treated and untreated adults of the opposite sex. Successful mating was assessed by the presence of spermatophores in the bursa copulatrix.Mating was totally inhibited when the copulating pairs were produced from treated prepupae. Those emerging from treated pupae were less affected. Treating 6th instar larvae did not reduce mating appreciably. The effect of treating female insects was more pronounced than treating males. The mean number of eggs laid per female was highly reduced when adults emerged from treated immature stages. Considerable decrease occurred in the crosses: treated female × untreated male. Fecundity was less affected in the crosses: treated male × untreated female. Fertility was also reduced in all treatments and the percentage sterility indicated that the highest detrimental effect was obtained in the crosses: treated male × treated female, followed by untreated male × treated female and finally treated male × untreated female.
