PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF CERTAINCENTAUREA SPECIES

Abstract
A phytochemical investigation of four of the Centaurea species grown in Egypt viz. C. alexandrina, C. calcitrapa, C. glomerata and C. pallescens, was undertaken. The study of the carbohydrates revealed the presence of stachyose, raffinose, melibiose, sucrose, galactose, glucose and fructose in the four species. The alkaloid stizolphine and choline were isolated from C. calcitrapa. A comparative TLC study of the alkaloids of the four species was carried out.
