Abstract
SUMMARY Leaf disks maintained on distilled water or with the addition of 0.4 ppm of kinetin have proved effective for the culture of Erysiphe cichoracearum. Thirty-six clonal isolates of E. cichoracearum from Helianthus and Zinnia, which were grown by this method, failed to produce cleistothecia. However, intercrosses between these clones resulted in cleistothecia after 3 to 4 weeks. The crossing data confirm heterothallism in E. cichoracearum and establish the presence of 2 mating types. With the exception of a few specific crosses, isolates from Zinnia are interfertile with those from Helianthus. These exceptions suggest that additional factors affect compatibility in certain strains.
