Abstract
Continuum Dirac-Fock equations are solved for elastic scattering of electrons on xenon. The polarisation of the target atom is described by a model polarisation potential with one adjustable parameter r0 in the cut-off function. The electrostatic exchange for both large and small components of the Dirac wavefunction is treated exactly. Moreover, the exchange contribution to the polarisation potential is included and is found to decrease the d-wave phaseshifts by as much as 25% in the energy range 1-25 eV, and thereby to improve the agreement between theory and experiment for the total differential cross sections. However, some discrepancies still remain, particularly for the spin polarisation. Keywords
