Gas-Liquid Chromatographic Measurement of the Kinetics of the Transesterification of Diethyl Malonate

Abstract
Gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of the products from tranesterification of diethyl malonate with 3-methyl-1-butanol are described. A complete and particularly lucid analysis of the course of the reaction is obtained by this method of analysis. Each of the two steps of the transesterification reaction has been characterized for the equilibrium constant and for the rate dependence on the malonate. The kinetics of the transesterification are consistent with the cyclic form of the enol of the malonate in the transition state of the reaction.
