Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis infection elicits both antibody and cell-mediated immune responses. Neutralizing antibody is serovar-specific and dependent upon conformational epitopes. CD4 lymphocytes (predominantly type 1 helper T cells) function in protection, but the role played by CD8 lymphocytes in protection or pathology is less well defined. Local cytokine induction is correlated with inflammation and effector influx, and may direct the acquired immune response. Keywords
